魔物は背中から忍び寄る。

私たちのご先祖はそんなふうに考えました。
だから、お母さん達は子どもの魂を守るために、着物の背中に小さな魔除けの印を縫い取りました。

縫い「目」が、魔物を睨んで追い払います。これが「背守り」です。
昔の女学生達は、厚紙を針と糸で縫って「背守り」の図案を練習しました。
それにならって、私達も背守りを作ってみましょう。その図案には、いろいろな意味が込められています。

Let’s Make “Back Guard”

Demons creep up from the back – that is what our ancestors thought.
Therefore, to protect their children’s souls, mothers sewed small charms on the backs of their kimonos to ward off evil spirits.

The sewn “eyes” glare at the demons and drive them away. This is “Back Guard” .

In the olden days, schoolgirls practiced sewing the design of “Back Guard” on thick paper with a needle and thread.

Let us follow their example and make our own back guards. The designs have various meanings.

江戸時代の切り紙「もんきり」と出会い、暮らしの中で息づいてきた「切り紙」や伝統的な「かたち」、風習、行事などを研究。日本各地、中国などをフィールドワーク。書籍の出版やワークショップ、展覧会などを通して私たちの今の暮らしの中に活かす活動を続ける。「知る、やってみる、問い続ける」をモットーに、旧暦の日取りで行う実験的なワークショップ「旧暦カフェ」を主宰。
